Project Success and Control Through Scheduling
(4.5 Hrs / CCM Renewal Points)
In a perfect world all projects would be delivered on time and
within budget. In today’s construction environment, especially the public-sector,
low-bid environment, it is not a perfect world. Projects are more complex, and
Owners, and their Construction Managers, are faced with challenges that are demanding
and dynamic. To meet the challenges of construction today there is a much greater
need for improved project control. The main tool available to control the project
is the schedule. However, on many projects today, realistic and adequate schedules
often are never developed, or maintained. This presentation will focus on:
- How To Get the Performance the Owner/CM Wants
- Planning for Success and Doing
it Right the First Time
- Specification Requirement
- Baseline Development and Analysis
- Assignment and Management of Responsibilities
- Damages Incurred when Project
Finishes Late
- Schedule Updates—Review and Analysis
- Dealing with Change
- Software and Analysis Tools
Instructor: Leo Sumner - Founding Partner, The Tiburon Group,

Professional Development Course:
Documentation: New Paths to Project Success
2 Hrs / 2 CCM Renewal points
Documentation can help your project progress smoothly and successfully, or
stop it in its tracks and land you in court. Simple comments, or missing
information, can mean the difference between establishing, or eliminating
claims, and expediting or delaying a project.
It's a delicate balance between having adequate substantiation and communication,
without creating the animosity associated with too much paperwork bogging
down a project. It's vital to establish effective ways to create, and control,
the paperwork necessary to maintain the flow of information needed to keep all
stakeholders up to date with a clear understanding of what is happening on the
project.
This will be a useful course for Construction Managers, Inspectors, Contract
Administrators, Schedulers, General Contractors, and more.
Attendees will benefit from unique tools and formats and many real-life
examples. In addition to an attorney's overview of the evidentiary significance and
admissibility of certain project documentation, topics covered will include:
- Submittal Logs
- RFI Logs
- Telephone Logs
- Daily Reports
- Project meeting minutes: preparation, review and revision, and
distribution
- Pay applications: tracking and documentation
- Project photographs and videos
- Change orders: preparation & tracking
- Use of a project event form to track and document events that impact the
cost and/or scheduling of a project
- Electronic communications dos and don'ts
- Using project documentation for effective project communication
Instructor: William Last, Last and Faoro, LLP
Mr. Last is a licensed California attorney whose practice primarily emphasizes
transactions, litigation, arbitration, and mediation on behalf of companies and
individuals involved in the construction industry. He has represented developers,
lenders, design professionals, general contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers
in a wide range of matters relating to mechanics' liens, stop notices, construction
failures, latent defects, general contract and bidding disputes, and professional
liability, as well as in disputes concerning delays, acceleration, disruption,
and payment. Mr. Last has drafted and reviewed numerous construction contracts. He
has been successful as lead defense counsel in numerous latent defect cases,
including one in which plaintiff's claim exceeded $19.5 million. In a recent
matter, a client he represented in a construction delay claim won an award of
damages in excess of $1.8 million, including $50,000 in punitive damages. Mr.
Last is also is a mediator and arbitrator on the Arbitration Works panel.
He is a member of a number of construction trade associations. As a result, he
is familiar with the issues and problems that the construction industry encounters. |
