TWO NEW PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES!!

Dealing with Change – What They Don’t Teach You in Construction Management 101

Construction is dynamic, and changes are inevitable. The key to success is how efficiently and effectively the Construction Manager deals with changes.  This seminar will address means of avoiding unnecessary delays that can result from change, including ways a schedule can be a tremendous tool, or a misleading trap, in efficiently managing changes on a project.

Using real life changed condition examples, the instructor will teach you strategies you can implement to avert, and avoid creating, some of the stumbling blocks often associated with change.

Instructor: Leo Sumner, Principal, The Tiburon Group, LLC

Tricks, Traps & Ploys of CPM Scheduling (What Owners Need to Know about CPM Scheduling)

This workshop will focus on what Owner’s Facilities/Construction Management personnel should look for in the Baseline CPM schedule from their contractors on the Owner’s construction projects. It will address how the schedule can be set up to sequester float and put the Owner in a liability position. It will also address how the schedule can be manipulated during updates to hide delays, shift the critical path to put the Owner in a liability position, or set the ground work for a delay/disruption claim.

  • Understand the fundamentals of scheduling review and analysis of baseline CPM schedules

  • Recognize how scheduling abuse and errors can derail a project and lead to disputes and claims

  • Understand resource constraints and how they can help or derail your client’s position

  • Discuss the use of update schedules to analyze delays, deal with changes and evaluate recovery plans

The annual scholarship and awards dinner honors the CM firms who have made a significant contribution to their projects and honors students who have won scholarships to study construction management.

Project Achievement Awards: Since 1999, CMAA has been presenting Project Achievement Awards to recognize instances in which professional Construction Management has made a significant contribution to the successful completion of a challenging project or program.

Scholarships to CM Students: CMAA Northern California Chapter's Scholarship Program began in 2005 and is based on our chapter's support for local construction management college students. Cost & Schedule Analysis, Claims Evaluation & Resolution
(3 CCM renewal points)

Instructors:
Jeffrey A. Sykes – Partner, Farella Braun + Martel LLP
Yeshim Erim, AIA, LEED AP – Sr. Scheduler & Claims Analyst, URS Dispute Resolution Group

Learn about:

Although avoiding claims is always a goal, claims happen. When they do, they need to be resolved. This program addresses analysis, evaluation, and resolution of unavoidable claims. It is based upon a hypothetical project and a hypothetical claim, and addresses how to assemble the internal and external resources needed to analyze and evaluate the claim, and focuses on schedule analysis issues. Those issues include: discussion of available schedule analysis methodologies, selection of appropriate schedule analysis methodology, the ethics involved in the selection process, and how scheduling experts can come to different conclusions applying the same schedule analysis methodology to the hypothetical claim. The program also addresses appropriate cost analysis methodologies, claims risk analysis, claims settlement valuation, and claims resolution strategies.
